SPC Deonca Bookman's journey in track and field began with disappointment. After being cut from her middle school's track team in seventh grade, she returned the following year determined to prove herself and earned a spot on the team. Although she initially wanted to become a sprinter, a high school coach recognized her potential in the hurdles, a decision that transformed her career. Bookman went on to become one of Prairie View A&M University's most accomplished athletes, setting school records, winning multiple SWAC championships, competing internationally for Team USA, and reaching the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials final. She joined the Army in 2024 seeking opportunities for growth both on and off the track. Now competing through the Army World Class Athlete Program, Bookman credits WCAP with providing the resources to pursue her full potential while proudly serving her country as a Soldier-athlete.
