Growing up in Texas, Michael did not run, swim, or bike competitively. But he had an impressive high school athletic career, which began with a trip to the Texas State Championship as his school’s starting point guard. He enlisted in 1999, but a 2011 vehicle accident resulted in the loss of his arm and two years of intense rehab. Michael competed in a half-Ironman, and loved the sense of achievement. Since then, he has been selected to the Dare2tri Elite Para-Triathlon Team, qualified for the Para-Triathlon National Championships, and earned membership on the National Paralympic Skeleton Team.
